Walking around a rustic shore temple near Gokarna, India at dusk, I found myself captivated by the quiet atmosphere of the ancient wooden structure. Just as I passed a deeply weathered doorway, a small cat stepped out from the shadows and stopped, watching me with the intense, curious gaze of a guardian sphinx. Behind her, the reality of everyday devotion was laid bare—a messy, unswept floor and a cluttered altar bathed in the harsh, unnatural hum of a single fluorescent tube. I captured this moment to preserve the unexpected, beautiful contrast of the scene. It felt like standing on the very threshold between the sacred, timeless exterior and the mundane reality of the present, with this little temple guardian quietly bridging the gap.
